On June 6, 1998, Baotou Iron and Steel (Group) Co., Ltd., which was newly established by the former Baotou Iron and Steel Company as the main body, was officially inaugurated and shipped. This is the first restructuring and reorganization of a special-type enterprise directly under the autonomous region.
Baotou Iron and Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. is one of the earliest iron and steel industrial bases built after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It was established in 1954 and put into operation in 1959. In October of the same year, Comrade Zhou Enlai visited Baotou Steel to cut the ribbon for the No. 1 blast furnace.
Baotou Steel Group is an important iron and steel industrial base in China, the world’s largest rare earth industrial base, and a leading industrial enterprise in the autonomous region. It owns two listed companies: Baotou Steel Co., Ltd. By the end of 2015, Baotou Steel’s total assets had reached over 160 billion yuan.
The Bayan Obo Mine affiliated with Baotou Steel is a rare polymetallic intergrowth mine in the world. 175 minerals and 71 elements have been discovered. The reserves of rare earth rank first in the world and the reserves of niobium rank second in the world.
Baotou Steel has formed a supporting capacity of more than 18.5 million tons of iron, steel, and materials. It is the largest rail production base in the world, one of the seamless steel pipe production bases with the most complete varieties and specifications in my country, and the largest plate production base in Northwest China. The resource characteristics of the coexistence of iron and rare earth in the Bayan Obo mine have created Baotou Steel’s unique “rare earth steel” product characteristics.
