The Differences between Cold Drawn Flat Steel and Ordinary Flat Steel

Cold-drawn flat steel has a certain degree of stiffness and good surface flatness. However, ordinary flat steel has relatively poor stiffness, and its surface flatness cannot be compared with cold-drawn flat steel. However, flat steel in general has quite a few uses, such as as mechanical parts, escalators, and its parts in house frames.

Cold drawn flat steel is a steel product produced through a cold drawing process and has a flat cross-sectional shape. It is machined by drawing steel billets at room temperature. Compared with traditional hot-rolled or hot-drawn steel, cold-drawn flat steel has some unique features and advantages.

There are some differences between cold drawn flat steel and ordinary flat steel in terms of production process, performance and use:

Production Process

Cold-drawn flat steel: Cold-drawn flat steel is produced by mechanically drawing steel billets at room temperature. This process will allow the cross-sectional dimensions and surface finish of the steel to be controlled and improved.

Ordinary flat steel: Ordinary flat steel is usually produced by hot rolling or hot drawing, which means that the steel billet is pressed into a flat shape at high temperatures.

Performance differences

Cold-drawn flat steel: Due to processing at room temperature, the internal structure of cold-drawn flat steel is denser and the grain size is smaller, which gives cold-drawn flat steel better mechanical properties, such as strength and toughness.

Ordinary flat steel: The internal structure of ordinary flat steel may be slightly rough due to high-temperature processing, so its mechanical properties may be relatively low.

Different uses

Cold-drawn flat steel: Due to its excellent mechanical properties and surface quality, cold-drawn flat steel is usually used in mechanical parts, bearings and other fields that require higher precision and quality requirements.

Ordinary flat steel: Ordinary flat steel is usually used in general structures and projects, such as making steel structures, buildings, bridges, ships, etc.

Reasons for cracking of cold drawn flat steel

If cracks occur in cold-drawn flat steel, there are two key reasons. One is that the raw materials used in hot-rolled flat steel are inappropriate or incorrect.

Secondly, during the production process, the quenching time is not enough, or the raw materials are not subjected to actual flaw detection operations, and the existing problems have not been dealt with in a timely manner.

To sum up, there are some differences in the production process, performance and use of cold-drawn flat steel and ordinary flat steel. Which type of flat steel to choose depends on the specific needs and application scenarios.
