Singapore wants to build the world’s largest fully automated port, the construction and development of Tuas Port

Thus port

Thus port

Twenty years later, in the 1940s, Singapore will build the world’s largest fully automated port.

Before 2019, the Tuas Port project broke ground; in the past three years, despite all the troubles and challenges brought about by the new crown epidemic, the Tuas Port project completed the first phase of the project in December last year and has begun operations.

At present, one-third of the world’s container trade and one-quarter of oil seaborne trade pass through the Straits of Malacca and Singapore each year. The port plays a key role in linking Singapore to the world economy.

After completion, Tuas Port will occupy an area the size of two Ang Mo Kio towns, accounting for one-twentieth of Singapore’s total area, and its annual throughput will reach 65 million TEUs, almost doubling the current volume.

Over the next two decades, as more and more berths are commissioned, the importance of Tuas Port will be manifested in three ways:

1. Tuas Port will become the largest fully automatic port in the world, which can not only accommodate the largest container ship in the world today but also accommodate larger ships that may be built in the future. At the same time, it will also safely and efficiently manage the greater number and density of ship movements. All these can improve Singapore’s external connectivity.

Second, Tuas Port will become a key engine to promote Singapore’s economic development. In addition to consolidating Singapore’s status as an international shipping center, it can also promote the vigorous development of many related industries, including finance, marine insurance, maritime law, a ship brokerage, Professional services such as ship management, ship agency, and classification societies.

Since Tuas Port is adjacent to Jurong Lake District, Jurong Innovation District, Jurong Industrial Area, and Tuas Industrial Area, it means that port services and turnover will be faster and cost less, which also means that exports will be more efficient. Industries such as advanced manufacturing, cold chain, e-commerce and logistics will benefit the most.

3. With the development of Tuas Port, Singapore can create more opportunities and provide better jobs for workers.

Tuas Port will be more environmentally friendly and sustainable than the current port, and by 2050, it will achieve net zero carbon emissions. Port equipment such as quay cranes and vehicles will be automated and run on electricity to increase productivity and reduce carbon footprints.

At the same time, due to the adoption of fully automated cranes and container trucks, the Tuas Port will no longer need to use flood lighting at night, which can greatly save energy.

At present, the world’s largest container ship is 399 meters long. Tuas Port fully considers future development and can accommodate future ships larger than this.
