Rail installation deviation requirements for hoisting machinery

Rail installation deviation

Rail installation deviation

Crane rails form the dedicated running path for overhead cranes, gantry cranes and other hoisting equipment. Precision-aligned steel rails ensure hoisting machinery travels along the specified route, while evenly transferring wheel loads to the underlying foundation. Strict control of installation deviation is critical to ensuring stable crane operation, reducing rail and wheel wear, and extending the service life of the entire track system.
A standard crane track system consists of two parallel steel rails. During equipment operation, rails must remain fully stable without horizontal or vertical displacement, while retaining adjustability for later maintenance. All metal rail fastening components must be free of cracks, looseness and corrosion; parts with cracks must be replaced promptly, and other defects shall be remedied in a timely manner.

1. Crane Rail Installation Tolerances for Concrete Support Structures

The following deviation limits apply to crane rails installed on concrete crane beams and concrete foundations:
  • Track centerline position deviation: ±5mm from the designed positioning axis
  • Rail top surface elevation deviation: ±5mm relative to the design elevation
  • Track center-to-center distance (gauge) deviation:
    • For crane spans ≤ 10m: ±5mm
    • For crane spans > 10m: ±[5 + 0.25×(S-10)] mm (S = nominal crane span, unit: mm)
  • Parallel rail elevation difference: The relative elevation difference between the top surfaces of two parallel rails at the same cross-section of the plant shall not exceed 10mm.

2. Crane Rail Installation Deviation Standards for Steel Beam Structures

For crane rails mounted on steel crane girders, the following alignment and elevation tolerances shall be met:
  • Crane girder positioning deviation: The deviation of the crane beam centerline from the design axis shall be ≤ 5mm
  • Track centerline lateral offset: The displacement deviation of the track centerline shall be ≤ 1/2 of the crane girder web thickness
  • Track center-to-center distance (gauge) deviation: ≤ 3mm along the horizontal direction of the workshop
  • Dual-rail top elevation difference:
    • At crane beam support points: ≤ 10mm between two rails at the same cross-span position
    • At non-support sections of the crane beam: ≤ 15mm between two rails at the same cross-span position
  • Rail end joint alignment: Both the lateral displacement and height difference between two adjacent crane rail ends shall be ≤ 1mm.
