How to Install a Single Girder Overhead Crane: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Single girder overhead cranes are one of the most widely used hoisting equipment in industrial workshops, warehouses and material handling yards, featuring a compact structure, cost-effective performance and relatively straightforward installation workflow. However, proper installation is the foundation of safe, stable and long-lasting crane operation — it must always be carried out by a qualified, certified installation team in strict accordance with industry standards and design drawings. Below is a detailed breakdown of the standard installation process and scheme for single-girder cranes.

1. Site Survey & Pre-Construction Safety Preparation

Thorough on-site preparation is a mandatory step before any formal installation work begins, to eliminate hidden hazards and ensure construction safety.
  • First, conduct a full investigation of the installation site: verify the bearing capacity of the crane support beams, check the workshop clearance height, lifting operation space and ground load conditions, and remove obstacles that may interfere with hoisting and alignment work.
  • The dedicated safety officer shall carry out on-site safety education and technical disclosure for all construction personnel, clarify safety operation rules, explain key precautions for high-altitude work, hoisting operations and electrical wiring, and formulate emergency response plans for potential risks.
  • At the same time, check the delivered crane components against the packing list, including the main girder, end carriages, crane rails, fasteners and electrical parts, to confirm that all models, quantities and appearance quality meet the design requirements.

2. Crane Rail Laying & Alignment

The crane rail is the running foundation of the single girder crane, and its installation accuracy directly affects the operation smoothness and service life of the whole machine.
  • Hoist the crane rail sections onto the load-bearing crane beams, and pre-place matching track accessories such as steel sole plates, rail clips and fastening bolts in place.
  • Measure and mark the reference centerline on the crane beam first, and recheck the span and elevation of the support beams. Use chain blocks to adjust each rail section into position gradually, and fix them temporarily with hooks and steel wires during alignment.
  • Fine-tune the rail gauge, straightness and top surface levelness, control the rail joint gap and misalignment within the standard allowable deviation, and finally fasten all rail clamps firmly to lock the rails in place, ensuring no horizontal or vertical displacement during crane operation.

3. Main Girder Hoisting & Whole Machine Assembly

This is the core hoisting step of the whole installation project, which requires close cooperation between on-site personnel.
  • Select a truck crane of appropriate tonnage according to the weight of the main girder and the working radius. Based on the workshop height, choose wire ropes of suitable length, and shorten the sling length as much as possible on the premise of ensuring safety, to obtain sufficient lifting height.
  • Under the command of a dedicated signalman, hoist the main girder of the single-girder crane smoothly above the rails, and lower it slowly to dock with the two end carriages that have been pre-positioned on the rails.
  • Complete the bolt fastening and pin connection between the main girder and end carriages, check that all traveling wheels fit closely with the rail top surface, and confirm there is no wheel suspension or rail gnawing phenomenon. All personnel shall strictly abide by safety regulations during hoisting, and no one is allowed to stand under the hoisted girder.

4. Electrical Installation & Commissioning

After the mechanical structure is installed, the electrical system wiring and commissioning shall be completed to make the crane fully functional.
  • Connect the electrical control system of the single girder overhead crane strictly according to the product drawings, and wire the power supply circuit including the safety trolley line / reel flexible cable.
  • Install each limit switch (hoisting limit, traveling limit) and safety protection device in place according to the drawing, and adjust the trigger position to ensure accurate and reliable action. Install the three-phase power indicator light on the end wall of the rail side for easy power status observation.
  • After the wiring is completed, conduct insulation test and grounding test first, then carry out no-load test run, rated load test and overload test in sequence. Verify the running stability of each mechanism, braking performance and the effectiveness of all safety devices, and eliminate abnormal noise, jamming or other faults one by one until the crane meets the acceptance standard.
After all installation and commissioning work is completed, a formal acceptance inspection shall be organized in accordance with relevant specifications. Only after passing the acceptance and issuing the acceptance report can the single girder crane be officially put into use.
