crane beam and rail installation

Technical Requirements for Crane Beam and Rail Installation

The installation quality of crane beams and rails is a core factor ensuring smooth, safe and reliable operation of hoisting equipment. All construction work shall strictly follow the provisions of the Code for Construction and Acceptance of Hoisting Equipment Installation Engineering (GB 50278-2010). The specific technical requirements are specified as follows:

1. Interlayer Construction for Concrete Crane Beams

For concrete-structured crane beams, the concrete grouting layer or leveling layer between the beam body and the rail shall conform to engineering design specifications in terms of thickness, strength, flatness and construction process. Compact bonding between layers shall be guaranteed to provide a stable and accurate datum surface for rail laying.

2. Installation of Elastic Backing Plate Cushions

When elastic backing plates are adopted as buffer cushions under crane rails, the specification, dimensions and material properties of the plates must be consistent with engineering design requirements. Before tightening rail fixing bolts, the bottom surface of the rail shall be fully and tightly fitted with the elastic backing plate. If any gap occurs, shim plates shall be added underneath the elastic backing plate to fill the gap. The length and width of each shim plate shall be 10mm to 20mm larger than those of the elastic backing plate, ensuring full coverage of the backing plate to avoid local compression deformation.

3. Rail Laying on Steel Crane Beams

When laying rails on the top surface of steel crane beams, the rail base shall be closely fitted with the top flange of the steel crane beam. If a gap exists and its length exceeds 200mm, shim plates must be installed to eliminate the gap. Each shim plate shall be no less than 100mm in length, and 10mm to 20mm wider than the rail base. Each set of shim plates shall consist of no more than 3 layers. Once adjusted to the required position, the shim plates shall be welded and fixed to the steel crane beam to prevent displacement or loosening during crane operation.

4. Rail Fastening and End Stop Installation

After the rail’s elevation, center line alignment and parallelism are adjusted to meet design and specification requirements, all fixing bolts shall be tightened immediately to lock the rail in place.

In addition, rail end stops at both ends of the track must be installed prior to crane hoisting. The end stops on the same span end shall make full and uniform contact with the crane’s buffers, ensuring reliable buffering and limiting performance when the crane reaches the end of its travel.
