The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, connecting Indonesia’s capital Jakarta and its fourth-largest city Bandung, is the first such line in Southeast Asia. It also marks the first time China’s high-speed rail has exported its entire system, full industrial chain, and all related elements overseas.
At present, its high-speed EMUs have arrived one after another, and track laying on the main line is underway. All parties are actively preparing for the trial operation scheduled for the end of this year.

In early September, China’s high-speed train “express package” arrived in Jakarta. This group of high-speed EMUs tailored for the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway has a streamlined appearance and is painted in silver and red. Relying on the technology of China’s “Fuxing” EMU, it is integrated with Indonesia’s native culture; many Indonesians shouted, “Too cool.”

After a month of transportation, a few days ago, the EMUs were delivered from Jakarta to the Bandung EMU. The EMU will undergo on-site marshaling and commissioning here in preparation for the upcoming trial run at the end of this year.

In 2015, China’s high-speed railway successfully won the bid for the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project in fierce competition. Since then, the first high-speed railway in Indonesia and the first high-speed railway in Southeast Asia have begun to be implemented in the efforts of Chinese builders.

The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway has a total length of 142 kilometers and a maximum design speed of 350 kilometers per hour. It is a landmark project for China and Indonesia to jointly build the “Belt and Road” and deepen practical cooperation. After the opening to traffic, the time from Jakarta to Bandung will be shortened from more than 3 hours to 40 minutes.

At present, all 13 tunnels of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway line have been completed, and the completion of the subgrade, bridge, and station civil works is more than 92%, and the track laying of the main line is progressing steadily.

The more than 30,000 tons of 50-meter high-speed steel rails used on the entire Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail line are produced in China, shipped to Indonesia by sea, and transported by rail to the Bandung track laying the base, where they are welded into 500-meter steel rails, and then long-rail transport trains are used. Transported to the construction site for laying.

However, due to the large difference between the railway tracks of the Indonesian railway and China, the railway transportation of steel rails in Indonesia has encountered great difficulties.

Feng Kai, chief engineer of the entire track-laying task of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project: Indonesia’s narrow-gauge railways are different from China’s. They have been used for a long time. In addition, the geometry of the lines is also relatively poor, which has caused a lot of rail transportation. Difficulties.

The team continued to overcome difficulties, coordinated and cooperated with the Indonesian side, and finally solved this technical problem. It also established a mature 50-meter rail welding production line in Indonesia and trained a large number of local Indonesian technical backbones.

Feng Kai, the chief engineer of the track-laying task of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project, said, “The workers we selected, starting from scratch, are now competent for some small and medium-sized jobs, especially in the rail yard welding, some of which has been independently operated by the Indonesian side.”
